The Court Yard Hounds - Amelita

I'll be honest, before a few weeks ago, I'd never heard of the Court Yard Hounds. But you know who I had heard of? The Dixie Chicks. Court Yard Hounds is comprised of two of the three Dixie Chicks. I recently was offered the opportunity to review their latest album - Amelita. I loved the Dixie Chicks growing up and I was so excited to see what two of the group members were up to.

Emily Robison and Martie Maguire, who are real life sisters, have taken a few years off and are back with a new sound. Their first self titled album was released in 2010 and now they're back with their sophomore album. Robison, the lead singer, has a lovely, soothing voice. I hear her and it reminds me of Sheryl Crow a bit but with songs that have more of a Southern twang. And these girls sure know how to get your foot tappin'.

I just got back from a trip to the South and am on a country music, sweet tea, and lemonade kick. The Court Yard Hounds have a smooth, relaxing, Southern sound that just make you want to sit out on the front porch swing. My favorite songs on the album are Sunshine, Aimless Upward, The World Smiles, and The Road You Take. They're close your eyes and sit out under the stars on a warm summer night kind of songs.

The ladies sure know how to play those instruments. I love the country twang they give them - flavors that seep through from their older music. These girls have been through a lot in the last few years and I definitely think that their music has matured. This album contains a new perspective, which is due in part to time passed since Robison’s divorce. “I’ve been freed of all of those time-heals-everything kind of things,” says Robison. “Now, I’ve opened up to other ideas and ways of looking at life and the world. I think it’s not only a more hopeful album, but it’s more… well fun.

I think a huge theme of the album is making your own road - your future is up to you. It's a great album - I'd definitely recommend it. You can buy Amelita now on iTunes and Amazon.

I participated in this campaign for One2One Network. I received a free copy of the CD to facilitate my review. By posting, I am eligible for incentives. All opinions stated are my own.

  1. I've not listened to the Dixie Chicks since they chose to mix politics with their music (I don't want politicians playing music and I don't want musicians playing politics). But maybe it's time to give them a try again.
