Summer Lovin': Megan's Post-Christmas-in-July Wall Hanging

Today we have Megan from Crafty Meggy. I love seeing all the sewing projects Megan tackles on her blog. Today she is sharing a post-Christmas in July project with us. If you really think about it, Christmas is just around the corner. It's time to start crafting! Here she is!

Hello Craft a Spell readers! I'm so excited to be here with you today and to share a fun sewing project! My name is Megan and I blog over at Crafty Meggy. I've been blogging for almost 2 years now and I LOVE it! I also love being crafty. I mostly do sewing, but I also make holiday themed crafts and sometimes I scrapbook. I'm in a house filled with boys, so my blog and crafting are my way of keeping myself sane! :) My 3 boys are great and keep me on my toes and my husband and I have been married for ten and a half years. It goes by fast, doesn't it! :)

Well, enough about me, let's move on to my project! I'm a beginning sewist; my husband got me a sewing machine for my birthday last year in April. I still feel like there's so much to learn and I'll never know it all! Since we just got over with the month of July, I thought it would be fun to show you a lap quilt I made last year as a post-Christmas in July project :)

I went to visit my mom in March 2012 and she is a quilter. That meant her stash of fabric was HUGE!! I had NO fabric stash to speak of and hers looked like a mountain! LOL I had fun going through all her fabric. She had tons of scraps, too! One day I was looking through the scraps and found she had a ton of small Christmasy fabric. I set them all out and we brainstormed something I could make with it. In the end we thought it would be cute to make a Christmas tree wall hanging.

 

This is what I started out with. My sister found some white fabric with stars on it to use on the sides.

 

Have you ever made a quilt before? I hadn't. This was the first time I'd done any sewing like this. I was really nervous about making a mistake. I pinned the edges right sides together, one strip at a time and then sewed them a quarter inch or less from the edge.

 

 

Here's the front of it before it was all the way finished. I was really happy with how it was turning out!

  

And here it is all sewn together and ironed.

 

This is the quilt as I pinned it to the batting to finish it up and quilt it. I finished the quilt hanging before I came back home in April and it has been sitting in my craft closet waiting for me to put a pretty hanger on it so I can hang it on the wall at Christmas time. Here's the finished version with green binding. I love how it looks and I can't wait to hang it up this year!

It was my first quilting project and I'm very pleased with it! I really hope to do more quilting, but it seems like such a daunting task!! My husband wants me to make our 3 boys Mario Brothers quilts for their Christmas presents this year. I hope I'm up to it! That will be a LOT of work!
