Bang Bang Shrimp!

My parents have been visiting Bonefish Grill recently due to a gift card they were given for Christmas. The first time they went, they forgot the card so they went back last week. Their favorite thing on the menu so far is the Bang Bang Shrimp appetizer. My mom immediately went in search for an imitation and she found this one.

You will need:
-1/2 cup mayonnaise*
-1/4 cup Thai Sweet Chili Sauce*
-3 drops Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce (or to taste) - we couldn't find this so we just used regular hot sauce
-1 pound shelled and deveined shrimp
-dry cornstarch
-oil for frying
-lettuce
-chopped scallions

*See note at bottom of recipe for suggestions

1. Mix mayonnaise with Thai Sweet Chili Sauce. Add hot sauce to taste.

2. Dredge the shrimp in cornstarch.

3. Deep fat fry the shrimp until lightly brown. (We looked online and found a recommendation to heat the oil to 350 degrees F).

4. Drain on a paper towel.

5. Put in a bowl and coat with the sauce.

6. Serve in a lettuce lined bowl and top with chopped scallions.

I'd never had this before and I thought it was decent. My parents, who have both had it, enjoyed it but said it wasn't as good as the Bang Bang Shrimp as Bonefish Grill. We'll definitely make it again but we decided next time we'll try it with less mayonnaise and more sweet chili sauce and more hot sauce. It wasn't spicy at all but maybe that sriracha hot chili sauce is where the heat comes from.

Have you nailed any imitation recipes from your favorite restaurants?

  1. Sriracha sauce can be found in the asian food section in the grocery store.

  2. Home deepfrying scares the crap out of me, but the sauce looks like it'd be great on anything. Thanks for linking up last week at ChickenScratchNY.com! I'd love to see you back this week!
